Google AI Overviews: how to be the source it quotes

AI Overviews sit above the results and answer the query outright. Here is what determines which sources get pulled into them, and what to change on your pages.

AI Overviews changed the shape of a search results page more than any feature since the knowledge panel. A generated answer sits above everything, cites a handful of sources, and frequently ends the session.

The commercial question is narrow: what gets you into that citation set?

Ranking is the entry ticket

The most useful observed pattern is also the least exciting. Sources cited in Overviews are overwhelmingly pages that already rank well for the query or a close variant.

This has a clarifying implication. There is no separate AI Overviews strategy that bypasses search fundamentals. Crawlability, indexation, topical authority and link equity remain the price of entry. What changes is what happens after you rank.

If a page is not ranking on page one, work on ranking. Restructuring it for Overview capture first is optimising a step you have not reached.

What gets selected from a ranking page

Among pages that rank, selection favours passages that answer the query completely and independently.

The failure mode is familiar from AEO: the answer exists across the page rather than inside one paragraph. A generated summary needs a fragment it can lift without inheriting ambiguity, and a page that requires reading three sections to understand one point supplies no such fragment.

How a page becomes an Overview source

Each stage removes candidates. Most pages fail at stage three.

  1. 1

    Indexed

The page is crawled, rendered and in the index.

  2. 2

    Ranking

It appears in the top results for the query or a close variant.

  3. 3

    Extractable

A self-contained passage answers the query completely.

  4. 4

    Corroborated

Claims align with what other credible sources say.

  5. 5

    Selected

The passage is summarised and the source cited.

Where Overviews appear, and where they do not

Overview frequency varies enormously by query type. Informational, definitional, comparison and how-to queries trigger them often. Navigational and clearly transactional queries trigger them far less.

That distribution matters for prioritisation. If your commercial pages target transactional intent, Overviews may barely touch them — while your top-of-funnel content is heavily affected. Audit which of your queries actually show one before allocating effort.

The click trade-off, stated honestly

Being cited in an Overview can reduce clicks to your page. The user got their answer. That is not a failure of your optimisation; it is the mechanic working as designed.

The compensation is exposure and authority attribution: your brand appears as the source of the answer, at the top of the page, before any competitor link. Some of that converts later through direct or branded search, and it will arrive in your analytics with no attributable source.

The honest position is that this trade is measurable in aggregate and not attributable per session. Report it as impressions, brand search volume and assisted pipeline rather than pretending click attribution captures it.

Practical changes worth making

Ordered by return on effort for a page that already ranks.

  • Move the complete answer into the first 100 words, in plain prose.
  • Add an H2 phrased as the exact question, with a self-contained answer beneath it.
  • Convert comparable information into a table — tables are pulled into Overviews disproportionately often.
  • Include the qualifying condition in the same passage as the claim, so the fragment survives extraction.
  • Name sources inline for any statistic, with a date.
  • Add an FAQ block answering the genuine follow-up questions, not padded variations of the main one.

Common mistakes

The recurring ones in audits.

  • Trying to optimise for Overviews on queries that never show one.
  • Treating a drop in clicks as a ranking problem when impressions rose and position held.
  • Adding schema to a page whose answer is still vague.
  • Removing detail to make the page 'more extractable', which strips the depth that made it rank.
  • Reporting Overview appearance as a KPI when the commercial query set does not trigger them.

Measuring it

Search Console remains the primary instrument. Watch impressions and average position alongside clicks — a page with rising impressions, stable position and falling clicks is very likely being summarised above the fold.

Supplement with manual checks across your priority query set, recorded monthly. Overview presence is volatile enough that a single check tells you very little.

Frequently asked questions

  • Generated summaries displayed above the standard search results, answering the query directly and citing a small number of sources. They appear most often on informational, comparison and how-to queries.
