Entity SEO and knowledge graph optimization

Before a machine can recommend your business it has to know what your business is. Entity work is the least glamorous and highest-leverage layer in AI visibility.

Almost every AI visibility programme that stalls stalls for the same reason, and it is not content quality. It is that the machine cannot confidently establish what the business is.

Entity work fixes that. It is tedious, it produces no impressive deliverable, and it is reliably the highest-return work available in the first ninety days.

What an entity is

To a search or AI system, your business is not a website. It is an entity — a node with attributes: a name, a category, a location, a set of services, relationships to other entities.

That node is assembled from every mention of you across the web. Your own site is one input among many, and not the most heavily weighted one.

When those inputs agree, the entity is strong and a model can state facts about you confidently. When they disagree, the system either hedges or picks wrong.

How entities get fragmented

Fragmentation is rarely deliberate. It accumulates.

  • A legal name on filings, a trading name on the website, an abbreviated name on social profiles.
  • Three different one-line descriptions written by three different people over five years.
  • An old office address still live on directories nobody has audited.
  • Category selections that differ between Google Business Profile, industry directories and your own schema.
  • A rebrand completed on the website but never propagated to third-party sources.

Most organisations we audit find three or more descriptions of themselves in active circulation, and cannot say which one is official. That is the problem in one sentence.

The entity consistency audit

A half-day exercise with disproportionate return.

Entity reconciliation sequence

Define once, then propagate. Doing it in the other order guarantees rework.

  1. 1

    Define canonical

One name, description, category, address, phone. Written down and owned.

  2. 2

    Inventory mentions

Search your name; list every property, listing and profile found.

  3. 3

    Find contradictions

Note every source that disagrees with the canonical version.

  4. 4

    Correct at source

Update each property. Some require claim processes; do them anyway.

  5. 5

    Mark up

Organization schema with sameAs pointing at every corrected profile.

  6. 6

    Re-audit quarterly

Third-party data decays. This is maintenance, not a project.

Structured data as the entity anchor

Organization schema is the clearest statement you can make about your own entity. It should carry the canonical name, the description, the logo, the address, contact points, and a sameAs array linking every profile you control.

That sameAs array is doing specific work: it tells a system that these scattered profiles are the same entity as this website. Without it, the connection has to be inferred, and inference fails more often than people expect.

Relationships to other entities

A well-understood entity is connected to other well-understood entities. Your city. Your industry. The technologies you work with. The certifications you hold. The associations you belong to.

Mentioning these explicitly and consistently — in prose, in structured data, and on third-party profiles — places your entity inside an existing graph rather than leaving it floating.

This is why specific capability language beats generic marketing language for machine comprehension. 'Industrial automation systems integrator in Dubai working with Siemens and Allen-Bradley PLCs' connects to five known entities. 'Leading provider of innovative solutions' connects to none.

Defending against confident misinformation

The failure mode worth taking seriously is not being absent from an answer. It is an assistant stating something wrong about you with confidence — a discontinued service, an old address, a merged entity, a competitor's detail attached to your name.

That happens when contradictory information exists and gets resolved badly. Publishing a correction on your own site rarely fixes it, because your site is one weak input against several agreeing wrong ones.

The fix is finding the wrong sources and correcting them individually. Slow, unrewarding, and the only thing that actually works.

Common mistakes

  • Investing in content volume while the entity remains fragmented.
  • Deploying Organization schema without a sameAs array.
  • Treating entity work as a one-off project rather than quarterly maintenance.
  • Using different business name forms across social profiles for stylistic reasons.
  • Assuming a rebrand propagates automatically to third-party sources.
  • Writing capability descriptions so generic they connect to no known entity.

Frequently asked questions

  • Entity SEO makes a business unambiguously identifiable to machines by publishing one consistent name, description, category and location across your site, structured data and every third-party source.
