Comparison
Freelancers offer the deepest single-discipline expertise at the lowest cost and the lowest exit risk. Agencies offer multiple disciplines, continuity through absence, and infrastructure. The deciding question is whether anyone internally can hold the standard across the work.
When the first option wins
A freelancer wins for episodic work, genuine single-discipline specialism, and buying senior judgement in small quantities — a fractional lead two days a month is an underused option.
When the second option wins
An agency wins when work spans disciplines, when continuity through holidays and illness matters, and when nobody internally can coordinate several specialists.
Verdict
Three freelancers with no shared view of the funnel produce three locally-optimised pieces and no system. If you cannot supply the coordination, buy it.
